POSITION SUMMARY

 

This position is 6-9 hours a day, Monday through Thursday. It is a benefited position with the possibility of more hours driving for field trips, athletic events, etc. The successful candidate will ensure students' safe and efficient transportation to and from school on a scheduled route and will routinely involve transportation to other school-sponsored events, including field trips, athletic events, etc. Must perform independently and work cooperatively with other transportation personnel and administration.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Safely transport students to and from school and other district-sanctioned events; transport additional passengers, including teachers, parents, etc., when required
  • Ensures that students are delivered to designated drop-off points and, when applicable, met by the designated parent and/or guardian
  • Demonstrates and explains emergency evacuation procedures to passengers in accordance with Transportation Safety Training
  • Maintains daily mileage and route logs as required
  • Updates route maps and directions as needed
  • Transports students according to official route directions
  • Obeys all traffic laws and observes all mandatory safety regulations for school buses
  • Performs as a substitute driver as needed
  • Conducts a daily pre-trip safety inspection of the vehicle. Outside inspection includes but is not limited to tires, wheels, fluid leaks/levels, windshield, mirrors, warning system, exhaust system, and emergency exits. Inside inspection to include cleanliness, instruments and controls, gauges, warning lights, emergency equipment, etc. Cleans and sweeps bus interior. Fuels bus. Reports all defects or non-operational findings.
  • Communicate with teachers, principal, aides, and other officials as needed
  • Maintains order and discipline of students and other passengers on the bus per district policies, prepares conduct reports as needed
  • Operates wheelchair lift when applicable, including safely and securely loading and unloading passengers confined to wheelchairs
  • Monitors the activities of bus aides as it relates to their actions with students and parents

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • Ability to operate a standard or automatic transmission motor vehicle and foot controls with two feet simultaneously
  • Ability to use two-way communication equipment
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing
  • Ability to apply common sense to solve practical problems, multi-task effectively, and work under pressure in a variety of situations
  • Ability to work cooperatively and courteously with staff, students, parents, and community members
  • Knowledge of applicable Federal and State laws, District procedures, and Board policies
  • Ability to handle confrontation and conflict professionally, not emotionally

QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS

  • High School diploma or equivalent; 2 years driving experience
  • Arizona Class B Driver’s License with Air Brake, Passenger and School Bus endorsements
  • Arizona School Bus Driver Certification
  • Any equivalent combination of training, education, and experience that meets the minimum requirements
  • CPR and First Aid Certification
  • Possess a Valid IVP Fingerprint clearance card

WORK ENVIRONMENT

 

The usual and customary methods of performing the job’s functions require the following physical demands: occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling, some climbing and balancing, frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling, and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally, the job requires 90% sitting, 5% walking, and 5% standing. The job is performed under limited extreme temperatures and conditions with some exposure to the risk of injury and/or illness.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

 

Employees may be subject to travel, odors, dust, poor ventilation, workspace restrictions, blood-borne pathogens, and loud noises. Employees may be required to lift or exert up to 50 pounds of force to move objects occasionally, up to 30 pounds of force to move objects frequently, and up to 30 pounds of force to move objects constantly. Employees must also pass the Physical Performance Test in accordance with the Arizona Dept. of Public Safety and Arizona Administrative Code R-13-13-102. The physical demands described here represent those that an employee must meet to perform the essential functions of this job successfully.
