White Mountain Institute is our alternative HS with an online and in person presence. This is a part time, 10 month position, Monday through Friday, 5 hour days.
POSITION SUMMARY:
This position involves working with students in groups, and more often individually; grading papers, monitoring of student conduct and academic progress. Work is performed under moderate supervision of a classroom teacher and the alternative school principal. Position requires those who fill it to be able to think on their feet and take the initiative, while continuing to operate in the overall philosophy of the program.
Excellent oral and written communication skills. College-level proficiency in reading, writing, and mathematics. Ability to work effectively and cohesively with a variety of student and staff personalities and abilities to ensure student success. Must maintain a positive, pleasant demeanor during stressful situations. Proficient with MS Office and/or Google Suite software and navigating the internet. Ability to troubleshoot minor technology issues, multi-task, and move quickly and easily from one task to another. Strong organizational skills are necessary.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Convey a positive message
- Assist students with placement testing, registration, and submission of course work
- Oversee the learning environment and monitor students
- Proctor assessments
- Work with college instructors and District personnel
- Utilize classroom technology to support student connectivity and the learning environment
- Maintain attendance and perform record keeping tasks
- Request and document equipment repairs
- Maintain security of lab and its contents
- Keep inventory of equipment and materials
- Supervise classroom during temporary absence of teacher
- Perform other related duties as assigned
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
Prior paraprofessional experience on this job or others of a similar nature. Good computational, spelling and reading skills and the ability to learn how to use instructional technology is required. MUST be able to work cooperatively and communicate effectively with students who often have not been successful in the past in school and/or in life. Must be able to follow directions accurately and maintain confidentiality at all times. Those who fill the position must have the ability to be patient and able to build relationships with young people, while serving as a caring and understanding role model of adult behavior.
